Nintendo CEO Hiroshi Yamauchi Dies At 85

Hiroshi Yamauchi, Nintendo company owner and CEO, died on Thursday in Kyoto, Japan at the age of 85 because of complicated pneumonia. Mr. Yamauchi, who led Nintendo from 1949 to 2002, was Japan’s most unlikely high-tech success story. Named president of the family business at 22, he steered Nintendo into board games, light-emitting toy guns and baseball pitching machines — fruitless forays that he later attributed to a “lack of imagination” — before the company arrived at arcade games. Its Donkey Kong and the original Mario Bros. became hits and gave rise to Nintendo’s wildly successful home video game business.

The Nintendo Entertainment System, a console first released in Japan in 1983 as “Famicom,” unseated early leaders in the video game industry, selling more than 60 million units thanks to shrewd marketing, close attention to product quality and a crop of games based on unlikely yet endearing characters that soon became household names. In 1988, The New York Times wrote: “Many Nintendo best sellers, like Super Mario Bros. 2, are based on wildly preposterous premises, this particular one being two mustachioed Italian janitors who endure various trials, such as dodging hammer-swinging turtles and lava balls and man-eating plants, in order to save a Mushroom Princess. No matter. Kids can’t get enough of the games.” Under Mr. Yamauchi, who professed not to understand video games, Nintendo went on to dominate the business. When a successor machine was released in 1990, fans camped outside electronics stores for days in anticipation; it sold almost 50 million units. Next came the Nintendo 64 and Nintendo Game Cube home consoles, as well as Game Boy hand-held machines. Nintendo dominates the list of all-time top-selling games. In the early 1990s, Mr. Yamauchi found himself in the middle of an international dispute when he offered to buy a majority stake in the Seattle Mariners.

The team, established in 1977, had been threatening to leave Seattle if it could not find a new owner willing to keep it there. Nintendo had its United States headquarters in Seattle. The team’s owners approved the deal but the commissioner of Major League Baseball, Fay Vincent, and a four-man M.L.B. owners’ committee initially opposed it. They relented and approved the sale in 1992 after Mariners fans and the Seattle news media rallied in favor of it. In 2001, the Mariners signed the star Japanese outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, now with the Yankees, helping to open the door for many more Japanese players to join major league teams in the United States. In a show of his characteristic detachment, however, Mr. Yamauchi confessed at the time that he was not much interested in baseball, either. He said he had never gone to a baseball game and is thought to have never gone since.

One of his few hobbies was the Japanese board game Go, which he played at the master’s level. Hiroshi Yamauchi was born in Kyoto on Nov. 7, 1927. He was raised by his grandparents after his father, Shikanojo Yamauchi, deserted the family. The Yamauchis had been makers of hanafuda cards, a Japanese playing-card game based on flowers, since 1889. Once favored by the elite, it became popular as a gambling game, often played by Japanese gangsters. Mr. Yamauchi joined the family business in 1949 after his grandfather had a stroke. He moved quickly to take control at the company, forcing out a cousin and later purging officers appointed by his grandfather. But the playing-card business was in terminal decline, and Mr. Yamauchi shifted the company’s focus to one toy after another until he found success with video games in the 1980s. He was helped by the renowned video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, who joined the company in 1977 and created Mario, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Wii and other products. Mr. Yamauchi developed a strategy that set him apart from other consumer electronics manufacturers in Japan. From early on, he farmed out the production of Nintendo’s video game machines to smaller suppliers, allowing the company to maintain a relatively small staff and low overhead costs.

Nintendo approved only a handful of games each year, whether designed internally or by outside companies, ensuring that prices and profit margins remained high. There were some misfires under Mr. Yamauchi’s watch. The company’s cumbersome, headache-inducing Virtual Boy portable console — a red box on legs with rubber visors that players peered into to play games in 3-D — was a flop. And beginning in the late 1990s, first Sony, then Microsoft steamrolled into the gaming market with new consoles — the PlayStation and Xbox, respectively — challenging Nintendo’s dominance. Mr. Yamauchi stepped down in 2002 — “I have no energy left,” he told reporters — and is credited with going outside the family to appoint a successor to steer Nintendo through rocky times. Under Satoru Iwata, the current Nintendo president, the company roared back with its Nintendo DS hand-held machine and the Wii home game console, though Mr. Iwata, too, has stumbled with the most recent hardware releases and is increasingly under siege by smartphone games. Mr. Yamauchi’s survivors include a son, Katsuhito. In one of his last interviews, with the magazine Nikkei Business in 2003, Mr. Yamauchi offered a longer view of the gaming market. At the time, Nintendo was being pummeled by Sony’s immensely popular PlayStation 2 console. But he scoffed at suggestions that the battle for supremacy in gaming was over. “That’s absolutely wrong; the gaming wars, they will never end,” he said, adding: “That’s just not how this business works. Nobody knows what tomorrow will bring.”

Arianny Celeste Uncensored Playboy Photos

Here are the uncensored photos of Arianny Celeste on her photoshoot in the Playboy Magazine last November 2010 issue. To those who didn't see these gorgeous and very sexy photos of Arianny Celeste, these are my gifts to you. Just play the video below.

Arianny Celeste is an American ring girl and model. She is best known for being a ring girl for the UFC. Celeste was born in Las Vegas, Nevada. She is of Mexican and Filipino descent . She attended Palo Verde High School and attended college at UNLV where she majored in fitness management and nutrition.

Arianny Celeste In A Bikini Vacation (Photos)

I'll say this for UFC, they've pretty much reinvented or at least reinvigorated the entire notion of ring girls. It was a pretty simply formula really. Instead of just finding any pretty girl in a bikini to strut around the ring, find some truly special hotties that really drive men absolutely insane and get them in bikinis to promenade in between rounds. A difference with very much distinction. Girls like Arianny Celeste who exudes the kind of sextastic that you don't just see seventeen times a day, but you sure wish you did. Catching Arianny on the beach in a bikini is like catching a lightning bug in a bottle.

Archaeologists Claimed The Possible Discovery Of Dalmanutha, A Biblical Town In The Gospel Of Mark

Dalmanutha, a Biblical town described in the Gospel of Mark as the place where Jesus sailed after miraculously multiplying a few loaves and fish to feed 4,000 people, may have just been discovered by archaeologists.

So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets. And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away. And straightway he entered into a ship with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha.

-Mark 8:8-8:10, King James Version

Dalmanutha is only mentioned in Mark's Gospel, but the corresponding passage in Matthew 15:39 says, "And he sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala," which has been identified with some certainty as the modern-day town of Migdal, located slightly inland near Israel's Ginosar Valley. Magdala is perhaps most well-known for its association with Mary Magdalene, or Mary of Magdala, who may have been born in the town.

Fields between today's Migdal and the coast are rich with archaeological discoveries, reports Ken Dark of the U.K.'s University of Reading, whose team discovered the town they are proposing is Dalmanutha while conducting a field survey. They have linked it with the 1986 discovery of a 2,000-year-old boat which was found on the shoreline, and to date is the most famous artifact associated with the specific area.

"Vessel glass and amphora hint at wealth," wrote Dark in the most recent edition of Palestine Exploration Quarterly, and "eights and stone anchors, along with the access to beaches suitable for landing boats — and, of course, the first-century boat … all imply an involvement with fishing."

The findings indicate that the town was prosperous and likely survived for centuries, as the pottery pieces date from as early as the second or first century BCE to around fifth century CE, the time of the Byzantine Empire. A Jewish community likely lived alongside a polytheistic one as tesserae cubes and limestone vessel fragments, "associated with Jewish purity practices in the early Roman period" have been found, Dark told LiveScience.

Modern-day Migdal has also been a cornucopia of ancient finds, some of which were discovered out in the open, repurposed by the current residents. Some architectural remains had been turned into seats or garden ornaments, and over 40 basalt ashlar blocks were found in a single garden.

Though Dark is not certain that the newly uncovered town is the Biblical Dalmanutha, the size of the town supports that identification. Dalmanutha is one of a few place-names known by researchers to relate to the Ginosar Valley shore, that is not already linked to an archaeological site.

J. K. Rowling Announced The New Harry Potter Film Series

J. K. Rowling announced that she's teaming with Warner Bros. to create a new series of movies based on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Newt Scamander.

In a statement posted to her Facebook page, J.K. Rowling announced that she would be teaming with Warner Bros. to create a new series of films “inspired by” the Hogwarts textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and the book’s author, Newt Scamander. Rowling, who will be making her screenwriting debut, had this to say about the new project:

“It all started when Warner Bros. came to me with the suggestion of turning ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ into a film. I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of ‘Fantastic Beasts’, realized by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood. As I considered Warners’ proposal, an idea took shape that I couldn’t dislodge. That is how I ended up pitching my own idea for a film to Warner Bros.

Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.

I particularly want to thank Kevin Tsujihara of Warner Bros. for his support in this project, which would not have happened without him. I always said that I would only revisit the wizarding world if I had an idea that I was really excited about and this is it.”

I'm sure Harry Potter fans would love these new series of movies especially me who's one of them.

DOs And DONT's Before Installing The New iOS 7 To Your Apple Device

Apple users have anxiously been awaiting the release of the newest operating system, iOS 7. Luckily for everyone who can’t wait to update their devices the wait is over, iOS 7 is set to release today, Wednesday, September 18th. Folks are wondering around what time they will be able to make the update.

We have not yet had an official time set for the release, but we do know that history shows the newest operating system could become available at around 10:00 a.m. PT. For those East Coasters, that means sometime shortly after noon. If you’re overseas, the update will come later in the afternoon.

iOS 7 promises to be the “world’s most advanced mobile operating system” and we can’t wait to see how user friendly it is. But before anything else let's tackle what are the dos and dont's before installing the new operating system.

Firstly, DEVICE COMPATIBILITY

Make sure your devices are capable of running iOS 7. Apple has posted a list of devices that will be able to run the latest OS.

Secondly, DELETE UNUSED APPS

Once you've determined your iDevice eligible for the upgrade, it's time to quickly go through the apps you currently have installed and delete any that are unused. Odds are, if you haven't opened an app in the last couple of months or so, you likely don't need it. Tap and hold an app icon until it starts moving, then tap on the X icon to delete. If you do end up needing the app in the future, simply redownload it from the App Store.

Thirdly, UPDATE INSTALLED APPS

After pruning up your installed apps, launch the App Store and ensure that the remaining apps are up-to-date. Some apps, such as Foursquare, are already releasing iOS 7 app updates so you'll be able to use them as intended on iOS 7 as soon as your OS update is complete. With iOS 7, app updates will automatically be downloaded for you; take a minute to cherish the last time you'll be forced to manually install app updates. With your apps up-to-date, you'll minimize the wait for a lengthy list of apps to update as well.

Fourthly, BACK THAT THING UP

You'll want to be sure to back up your device(s). Not only is this something you should be doing on a regular basis, but it's something that's especially important to do right before upgrading an OS. Should anything go wrong, you'll be able to restore your device with the same settings and information currently stored on it. The more recent the backup, the more recent the information capable of being restored will be. You can back up your device using iTunes or by letting iCloud take care of it for you.

Fifthly, UPDATE iTUNES

When a major version of iOS is released to the public, it's almost always accompanied by an update to iTunes. The update usually adds new features to iTunes, but it also brings with it compatibility for new devices and the new OS. You can check for the updated version of iTunes on Apple's site shortly after the release of iOS 7, or check for software updates on your Mac by clicking on the Apple Menu icon followed by Software Update. Windows users can use the Help menu in iTunes and click "Check for Update."

Once you've gone through this checklist and prepared your device for the update, prepare yourself to hold off on updating until later in the day after you get home or have some time away from work. Apple typically releases the update midmorning or early in the afternoon, depending on your time zone. In the past, there have been occurrences of the activation servers going down, leaving users with a device they can't use.

If you try to update while at work or away from home only to find yourself in a similar situation, you won't be able to restore your device until later in the day when the servers are stabilized. Have some patience early in the day to prevent yourself from being frustrated the remainder of the day.

Aaron Alexis, The Alleged Gunman In A Deadly Mass Shooting At The Washington Navy Yard

Aaron Alexis, the alleged gunman who died in Monday's deadly mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yard in the nation's capital, joined the Navy Reserves in May 2007, one day before his 28th birthday. He spent four years working as an aviation electrician's mate, most recently at the naval air station in Fort Worth, Texas. Military records show "a pattern of misconduct," and in January 2011 Alexis received a general discharge.

After leaving the service, Alexis worked as a defense contractor, and sources say he spent some time working at the Navy Yard where the shootings played out. Alexis maintained a secret clearance from his work with the Navy. Police records also show Alexis had been involved in two minor shooting incidents before. He was arrested in Seattle back in 2004 for shooting out another man's tires. He was arrested again in Texas in 2010 for firing a weapon into the ceiling of his apartment. He was not prosecuted in either of those cases.

Alexis also apparently was not a big presence on social networking sites, and sources say so far they cannot connect him in any way to any known threats or terror groups. But the motive for the shootings remains unknown. Sources say Alexis was armed with three weapons: an assault rifle, a shotgun and a pistol. All of the guns were recovered near his body. He worked his way to the third and fourth floors of a building, which then looked down on an open atrium. Sources say with that assault rifle, which is believed to be an AR-15, Alexis essentially was a sniper, able to easily target his victims from a very high vantage point.

He fired a large number of shots in a relatively confined area. Investigators are working to trace the weapons. They're also mapping the trajectory of the shots to better understand exactly how the assault played out. The FBI is looking for help to learn more about Alexis. They've put out a poster asking anyone with information to telephone 1-800-CALL-FBI. The poster is emblematic of how little they have about Alexis' motive in the investigation. If you look at the idea that they have run through all of their traps and databases and they see Alexis doesn't turn up in any significant investigations and isn't mentioned in any terrorism probes, then they're still stuck on what's the possible motive.
